How to make my laptop go to sleep when I close the lid.

  • PWPSD sets laptops to NOT go to sleep when the lid is closed by default (A) to avoid issues when plugging into docking stations, and (B) user requests to have them not do so when travelling from class to class.

  • However, users are able to change this setting:

There are 2 steps to change this setting:

  • Step 1) Exclude your machine from IT Power Management

    • Open Software Center on your workstation. (Search for it in the Windows Taskbar

    • Click on Options from the left menu.

    • Expand ‘Power Management’

    • Check ‘Do not apply power settings from my IT department to this computer’

  • Step 2) Change the lid closing behavior. (Note, if you just to step 2, it will look like it worked, but will likely stop working after a restart.)

    • Search in the Windows taskbar for ‘Lid’, and click ‘Change what closing the lid does’.

    • Choose your preferred settings from the dropdown menus. For example: Sleep.

    • Click Save Changes

  • Restart your computer and test the behavior when the lid is closed.
